He-3 Cryostat Cooldown Procedure Redesign

Project Brief

Redesigned the operating procedure for a He-3 cryostat, reducing cooldown time from about 7 hours to under 3 hours while making the process more repeatable for new operators.

Project Tech Stack

Experimental System
He-3 cryostat
Methods
cooldown procedure redesign · checkpoints · operator handoff
Technical Scope
startup sequence · failure-prone steps

Approach

The work turned an operator-sensitive cooldown sequence into a more reliable procedure with clearer checkpoints, fewer failure-prone steps, and tighter control over when each cooling stage should advance.

By redesigning the sequence around observable checkpoints instead of tacit operator judgment, the procedure became more repeatable for new operators and more dependable during daily lab use.

The result reads as experimental infrastructure rather than generic optimization: a practical procedure redesign that improved cooldown speed without sacrificing operational stability.

Outcome

Cooldown time dropped from roughly 7 hours to under 3 hours, while success rate and repeatability improved enough for the procedure to be used confidently by new operators.
